According to the New York Times, “Huh?” is the one syllable that everyone around the world seems to recognize. The way you write it may differ (in Japanese, we’d probably write it は?), but the meaning seems to be the same everywhere you go.

How do you write it in another language you’re studying?

The research is based on:

“a broader effort to challenge the dominant view that language is primarily a matter of inborn grammatical structure, as Noam Chomsky has argued. Instead, some researchers suggest, language is primarily grounded in social interaction.”
