How to tell a good story

What’s your favorite Pixar movie, long or short? These are two of my favorite shorts. They’re both great for language practice: not for listening comprehension, but for re-telling and discussion. “One Man Band” and “For the Birds”:

These are the 22 rules for good storytelling, according to Pixar. A few highlights:

1. You admire a character more for trying than for his successes.

6. What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal?

17. No work is ever wasted. If it’s not working, let go and move on – it’ll come back around to be useful later.

21. You have to identify with your situation/characters. What would make YOU act that way?
