Roller coasters weren’t actually invented by this American, but his reasons for starting are interesting (from The Smithsonian):

The U.S. seems to have a majority of the tallest, longest, and fastest roller coasters (called “jet coasters” here in Japan), though Japan has at least one in most of the top 10 lists.
