An artist’s relationship with his city

Artist and political activist Ai Weiwei shows us around his neighborhood in Beijing:

A few writing prompts:

  • Who would you like to show you around Tokyo (or another city)?
  • If there was something you could change about Tokyo (or another city), what would it be?
  • Based on this video and your own knowledge (and/or research) about Beijing, how are Tokyo (or another city) and Beijing similar or different?

More about Ai Weiwei:

Here’s a trailer for a documentary about the artist, where he’s described as a Chinese Andy Warhol. The movie was shown at the Sundance Film Festival several years ago and it won the “U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Defiance.”  And here’s a review of an exhibition of his work in England, which is called “momentous and moving.”
