Pioneers

These three women — from Japan, India and Syria — were the first women of their respective countries to go abroad to study medicine.

There are a few other photos as well. This is of Dr. Keiko Okami later in life. She was from Aomori and went to study medicine in the US when she was 25. Later, she opened a clinic in Akasaka. Read a little more about her in English here and also on Wikipedia, where I learned the kanji for her name: 岡見京子。
